What Are the Symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder?

Depressed mood most of the day Diminished interest or pleasure Significant weight or appetite change Insomnia or hypersomnia Psychomotor agitation or slowing Fatigue or loss of energy Feelings of worthlessness or guilt Diminished concentration Recurrent thoughts of death

These symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning.

What Are the Causes of Depression?

There is no one specific cause of Depression. However, there are temperamental, environmental, and genetic risk factors often associated with its onset. A high level of neuroticism or negative emotional reaction makes it more likely that an individual will develop a depressive episode in response to stressful life events. Adverse childhood experiences are also potent risk factors, as are chronic or disabling medical conditions.

Having any other major mental disorder increases the risk of developing depression — for example, dealing with ongoing anxiety issues can cause hopelessness, worthlessness, fatigue, and lack of enjoyment in life, resulting in atypical depression.
