PTSD comes from experiencing a severe physical or emotionally traumatic event such as a serious accident, natural disaster, or crime. Thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns become affected by the event and reminders of the event.
Per the DSM-V, PTSD is characterized by exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence in one or more of these ways:
Presence of one or more intrusion symptoms beginning after the traumatic event, such as recurrent distressing memories or dreams, flashbacks, or intense distress at reminders of the event — plus persistent avoidance of related stimuli, negative shifts in thinking and mood, and marked changes in arousal and reactivity.
Duration of the disturbance is more than 1 month (if less, Acute Stress Disorder may apply), and the disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment. Individuals may also experience depersonalization (feeling detached from one's own body or mind) or derealization (the world feeling unreal or dreamlike).
